Nerve Block and Trigger Point Injections

Nerve Blocks and Trigger Point Injections; Targeted, non-surgical relief for nerve and muscle pain – serving Toronto and Oakville

How Does It Work?

Nerve blocks and trigger point injections are minimally invasive treatments used to calm irritated nerves, release painful muscle knots, reduce inflammation, and provide rapid relief from chronic or acute pain. These procedures help reset dysfunctional pain pathways and restore normal muscle and nerve function without surgery. These treatments are administered by Interventional Pain physicians and are covered by OHIP.

The Benefits

  • Rapid pain relief—often immediately after treatment.
  • Reduces inflammation and nerve irritation.
  • Improves mobility and functional movement.
  • Resets chronic pain signaling pathways.
  • Supports recovery from injury by relaxing tight muscles.
  • Minimally invasive with little to no downtime.

Conditions Can Help With

  • Sciatica and lumbar radicular pain
  • Occipital neuralgia and migraines
  • Cervical or lumbar facet-related pain
  • Neuropathic pain and nerve entrapments
  • Muscle knots and myofascial trigger points
  • Shoulder, hip, jaw (TMJ), and gluteal tension

What to Expect

Referral & Intake
60-Minute Consultation
Treatment & Monitoring

Patients can be referred by their family physician or self-refer to the Upper Room Clinic. For self-referring patients, we require a family doctor on file before any prescription medications can be provided. During intake, we collect your medical history, current medications, and any relevant imaging or reports to help the physician understand your case.

You’ll have a dedicated, one-hour consultation with the physician to review your symptoms, previous treatments, imaging, and functional limitations. The doctor will perform a focused physical examination, explain the likely pain generators (nerves, joints, or muscles), and discuss treatment options—including nerve blocks, trigger point injections, and any adjunctive therapies. Together, you’ll decide on a plan that aligns with your goals.

If nerve blocks or trigger point injections are appropriate, they can often be performed in-clinic on a treatment day scheduled after your consultation. The procedure itself is brief, and most patients can return to normal activities the same day. We then monitor your response over time, adjusting the treatment plan, frequency of injections, and supportive therapies based on your pain relief, function, and overall progress.

During Treatment

During a nerve block or trigger point injection, the physician precisely injects a local anesthetic around the irritated nerve or knotted muscle. The procedure takes 5–10 minutes. You may feel brief pressure or warmth, followed by rapid pain relief. Most patients resume normal activities immediately, with only mild temporary soreness.
