Ultraviolet Blood Irradiation (UVBI)

Immune-activating intravenous light therapy for infections, inflammation, detoxification, and chronic illness. Ultraviolet Blood Irradiation (UVBI), also known as UBI, is an intravenous therapy that exposes a small amount of your blood to medical-grade ultraviolet light before returning it to the body. This process helps to inactivate pathogens, stimulate the immune system, increase oxygenation, and support whole-body detoxification. Used safely since the 1940s, UVBI is a foundational therapy in oxidative medicine, restoring immune balance and assisting the body in overcoming chronic infections, viral illness, inflammatory conditions, and toxic burden. The Upper Room Clinic offers UVBI therapy at both our Toronto and Oakville locations under medical supervision.

How Does It Work?

Ultraviolet Blood Irradiation is a medical procedure in which a small portion of the patient’s blood is drawn, passed through a sterile quartz chamber, exposed to therapeutic ultraviolet light (primarily UVC), and then reinfused into the bloodstream.

This brief UV exposure:

  • Helps deactivate viruses, bacteria, fungus, and other microorganisms
  • Makes microbial fragments more “visible” to the immune system
  • Enhances immune signaling
  • Improves oxygen utilization
  • Supports detoxification pathways

UVBI was widely used in hospitals during the 1940s–1950s for treating infections such as pneumonia, sepsis, tuberculosis, and viral conditions.

Today, it remains a valuable integrative therapy for infections, immune dysregulation, and chronic inflammatory states.

The Benefits

Patients and clinicians use UVBI for its broad therapeutic benefits, including:

  • Enhanced immune function
  • Improved oxygen uptake and tissue oxygenation
  • Reduction of viral, bacterial, and fungal load
  • Improved circulation and microvascular flow
  • Decreased inflammatory and toxic burden
  • Faster recovery from infections
  • Increased energy and reduction of fatigue
  • Activation of vitamin D precursors
  • Support for detoxification pathways

Conditions Can Help With

UVBI is commonly used as adjunctive support in:

  • Infections & Immune Conditions
  • Inflammatory & Autoimmune Conditions
  • Fatigue & Mitochondrial Dysfunction
  • Detoxification & Toxic Exposure
  • Adjunctive Cancer Support

UVBI is often paired with ozone therapy, EBOO, vitamin C, glutathione, and chelation for synergistic effect.

Treatment

Your clinician reviews your symptoms, immune history, medications, and overall suitability for UVBI.

A course of 4–12 sessions is common depending on the nature and chronicity of your condition. Your clinician will customize your plan.

We explain safety, detox reactions, infection response, and how to combine UVBI with other therapies.

A small amount of blood is drawn and passed through a UV-transparent irradiation chamber, where it is exposed to therapeutic UVC lightThe procedure takes 20–40 minutes. Afterwards, the blood is reinfused back into the body.

During Treatment

Most patients feel relaxed, neutral, or energized during and after the session. Some may experience: Mild warmth; Subtle detox sensations; Temporary fatigue; Improved clarity or breathing. These responses reflect activation of immune and detox pathways.

Why Choose Upper Room Clinic

Patients choose our Toronto and Oakville clinics because:

  • Medical-grade UVBI systems ensure safe, sterile, and effective light exposure
  • Treatments are delivered under physician supervision
  • We integrate UVBI into broader immune, oxidative, antiviral, and detox programs
  • Our team specializes in complex infections, chronic viral conditions, and immune dysregulation
  • Adjunct therapies (ozone, IV nutrients, EBOO, glutathione, NAD+, chelation) are available for enhanced outcomes
  • We provide a comprehensive and compassionate care environment

This ensures UVBI is not just a standalone therapy — it becomes part of a complete healing plan.
