Iron is the raw material your body uses to build hemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen to every tissue and organ. When iron stores run low, everything runs low: energy, focus, mood, exercise tolerance, even hair and skin. An iron infusion delivers iron directly into your bloodstream, bypassing the digestive system entirely. For people who can't tolerate oral iron, can't absorb it, or can't wait months for tablets to work, IV iron can rebuild iron stores in as little as one to two visits. Every infusion at Upper Room Clinic, at both our Toronto and Oakville locations, is physician-supervised: your dose is calculated from your own lab results, and your response is confirmed with follow-up bloodwork.
Iron deficiency is one of the most common nutritional shortfalls in Canada — and one of the most overlooked, because its symptoms creep in slowly and get blamed on stress, age, or a busy life. Heavy periods, plant-based or restrictive diets, gut conditions, endurance training, and frequent blood donation all drain iron faster than food can replace it. A simple blood test is all it takes to find out where you stand.
IV iron is for people with lab-confirmed iron deficiency — with or without anemia — particularly when oral iron isn't working or isn't an option. Common reasons our patients book an iron infusion include:

Because IV iron bypasses the gut, it can do what tablets often can't — replenish your iron stores quickly, completely, and comfortably.

Iron therapy at Upper Room Clinic is led by Dr. Biljana Kostovic, a physician with over 30 years of clinical experience spanning Emergency Medicine, Pain Medicine, and integrative care. Our clinical team also brings direct, hands-on experience treating sickle cell anemia in West African countries — a depth of experience with complex blood and iron disorders that few infusion clinics can match. Every iron infusion starts with bloodwork: we confirm the deficiency, calculate your dose from your own results, and retest after treatment to make sure your levels have truly recovered.
With locations in Davisville, Toronto and Oakville, you don't need a referral to be seen — though it's highly beneficial to share your family doctor's information with us, so we can coordinate bloodwork, share your results, and keep your GP in the loop. Book a discovery call, complete your labs, and begin treatment as soon as your results are in — in a monitored, physician-supervised medical clinic rather than a walk-in drip lounge.

No referral is needed — you can book directly and we'll arrange the bloodwork to confirm iron deficiency before treatment. That said, it's highly beneficial to share your family doctor's information with us: we can coordinate testing, send them your results, and keep your ongoing care connected. If you already have recent labs (ferritin, CBC), bring them and we can often move straight to dosing.
We use Monoferric (ferric derisomaltose): $390 for a 500 mg infusion and $650 for 1000 mg — your dose, and therefore your cost, is determined from your bloodwork before you book. With Iron with Insurance, the price drops to $130 per infusion, regardless of dose: if your extended health plan covers the iron itself, we write the prescription, you pick it up from your pharmacy, and you only pay us to administer it. OHIP covers iron infusions only in hospital outpatient settings, where waits can stretch to weeks or months.
Oral iron works for many people, but it can take months and often causes stomach upset, constipation, or nausea — and some conditions, like celiac disease, IBD, previous bariatric surgery, or heavy menstrual losses, make it hard to absorb or keep up. If your ferritin stays low despite tablets, or you can't tolerate them, IV iron is usually the logical next step.
It depends on how depleted your iron stores are. Because Monoferric can deliver up to 1000 mg in a single infusion, many patients are fully repleted in one visit; your exact protocol is set by our physician based on your bloodwork.
Yes — many extended health plans cover the iron medication itself. If yours does, we write the prescription at your wellness consultation, you pick the iron up from your pharmacy, and we charge just $130 for the infusion — regardless of dose. Every path starts with a wellness consultation, and the consultation fee is waived when you have your infusion within one week of your consult date. If your GP refers you with recent bloodwork, we can usually go straight from consultation to prescription to infusion without repeating labs.
Modern IV iron formulations are well tolerated. The most common effects are temporary — a metallic taste, flushing, headache, or mild joint and muscle aches for a day or two. Serious reactions are rare, and every infusion at Upper Room Clinic is physician-supervised, with monitoring during and after treatment.
Some patients notice improved energy within days, but the full benefit builds over two to eight weeks as your body makes new red blood cells. We schedule follow-up bloodwork four to eight weeks after your infusion to confirm your ferritin and hemoglobin have recovered.
There's no single cut-off — a ferritin below about 30 µg/L generally indicates depleted iron stores, and higher levels can still be inadequate when inflammation is present or symptoms persist. Our physician interprets your ferritin alongside your hemoglobin, iron panel, and symptoms to decide whether an infusion is appropriate and at what dose.
Eat normally and hydrate well before your visit — there's no need to fast. Bring any recent bloodwork, a list of your medications and supplements, and your family doctor's contact information so we can coordinate care. Plan for about 60–90 minutes for your first visit; afterwards, you can drive yourself home and return to your normal routine right away.
