Arthrosamid Knee Injections in Toronto & Oakville

Arthrosamid® is a cutting-edge semi-permanent injectable hydrogel that delivers long-lasting, proven pain relief for knee Osteoarthritis – improving your quality of life without surgery.

How Does It Work?

Arthrosamid is an injectable hydrogel that cushions your knee joint from the inside. Supported by more than two decades of research, Arthrosamid® is suitable, safe and effective for most patients with knee OA and is proven to maintain a significant, long-lasting reduction in knee OA pain up to 5 years post-treatment.

Arthrosamid is a polyacrylamide hydrogel: a soft, water-rich biomaterial composed of approximately 97.5% sterile water and 2.5% cross-linked polyacrylamide. It is manufactured by Contura International (Denmark) and is licensed in Canada as a Class IV medical device. When injected into the knee joint, the hydrogel does not dissolve, migrate, or get metabolized. Instead, over the weeks following injection, the gel augments the inner lining of the joint capsule through a process called vessel ingrowth, which creates a durable cushioning layer in the knee joint simulating the same function as cartilage.

The biointegration of the gel within the cells of the joint is the distinguishing factor of Arthrosamid compared to other knee OA treatments. Cortisone suppresses inflammation chemically and wears off within weeks. Hyaluronic acid (sold as Synvisc, Durolane, Monovisc, and others) supplements the joint's natural lubricant for several months before being cleared by the body. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and prolotherapy/prolozone stimulate the body's own healing response. Arthrosamid, by contrast, augments the joint structurally. Patients typically report reduced pain, improved range of motion, and a return to activities such as walking, gardening, golf, recreational sport, that osteoarthritis had been steadily taking away.

The Benefits

When Arthrosamid® is positioned within the tissue lining of the knee joint, it softens and increases the elasticity of this tissue, improving knee functionality and reducing pain.

  • Long-lasting pain relief – Proven to significantly reduce knee OA pain, with clinical studies showing benefits maintained for up to 5 years after a single injection.
  • Improves knee function – Enhances mobility and overall knee performance, supporting daily activities.
  • Reduces joint stiffness – Helps decrease stiffness, making everyday movement easier.
  • Non-surgical treatment – Offers an alternative for patients seeking pain relief without knee surgery.
  • Single-treatment solution – One injection can provide durable symptom relief without the need for repeated treatment cycles.

What should I expect after treatment with Arthrosamid®?

  • Following the procedure, you may be allowed to leave the clinic immediately, or you may wish to rest until you feel ready to go.
  • Your knee may start to feel uncomfortable as the anaesthetic wears off, but many patients do not report any discomfort.
  • If you do feel discomfort, symptoms may include mild to moderate pain and/or swelling at the injection site. If your knee becomes red, hot, largely swollen or more painful, you should immediately contact your Arthrosamid® physician for treatment.
  • You should continue your regular medication and pain killers as normal.
  • Please note, receiving Arthrosamid® may feel like a different sensation to other treatments that you have previously experienced as it is more viscous than other injectables.

What to Expect

Step 1:
Steps 2 & 3:
Step 4:

Your knee will be cleaned prior to treatment.

Arthrosamid® is then singularly injected into your knee’s synovial cavity. This might be performed with the help of ultrasound.

The needle is then removed and a plaster is placed over the injection site

During Treatment

Arthrosamid® is administered via a simple, one-step procedure performed by a qualified physician familiar with joint injections ensuring you’re in and out of the clinic the same day. Before treatment with Arthrosamid®, you will have a local anaesthetic to numb the area around your knee. You will also be given antibiotics ahead of this to protect you from any potential risk of infection.
