Shockwave Therapy (ESWT)

Non-invasive, fast-acting relief for chronic pain, tendon injuries, and stubborn musculoskeletal conditions. Shockwave Therapy—also known as Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT)—uses high-energy acoustic pulses to stimulate healing in injured tissue. It is one of the most effective non-surgical treatments for chronic tendon pain, plantar fasciitis, calcific shoulder tendinopathy, and muscle tension. At The Upper Room Clinic, we offer shockwave therapy at both our Toronto and Oakville locations, using medical-grade devices that deliver deep tissue stimulation with minimal discomfort and no downtime.

Shockwave Therapy works by delivering acoustic sound waves into injured tissue, where it:

  • Breaks up scar tissue and adhesions
  • Improves blood flow to poorly vascularized areas
  • Stimulates collagen production
  • Reduces local inflammation
  • Activates natural healing pathways

These acoustic pulses reach deeper tissue layers than manual therapy or massage, making shockwave an excellent option for chronic injuries that haven’t responded to physiotherapy, stretching, or rest.

Shockwave promotes fast, measurable improvements in mobility, circulation, and pain.

The Benefits

Shockwave Therapy provides immediate and long-term benefits, especially for chronic or stubborn pain:

  • Reduces acute and chronic pain
  • Increases blood flow and circulation
  • Breaks down calcifications (e.g., in the shoulder)
  • Stimulates collagen and tissue repair
  • Improves tendon and ligament strength
  • Releases tight muscle bands
  • Accelerates healing without surgery or injections
  • Minimal discomfort and no downtime

Many patients report meaningful improvement within 1–3 sessions, with full results developing over several weeks as tissue heals.

Conditions Can Help With

Shockwave is highly effective for conditions that have not improved with rest, physio, chiropractic care, or medication. We most commonly treat:

Foot & Ankle

  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Heel spurs
  • Achilles tendinopathy
  • Peroneal tendon injuries

Knee & Hip

  • Patellar tendinopathy (jumper’s knee)
  • IT band syndrome
  • Hip flexor or gluteus medius tendinopathy

Shoulder & Elbow

  • Rotator cuff tendinopathy
  • Calcific tendonitis
  • Frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis)
  • Tennis elbow / golfer’s elbow

Neck & Back

  • Myofascial pain
  • Trigger points
  • SI joint tightness
  • Chronic muscular tension
  • Shockwave is ideal for injuries that are chronic, overused, or slow to heal.

Treatment

Schedule an Injection Therapy Consultation.

You begin with a consultation at our Toronto or Oakville clinic to assess your injury, medical history, and treatment goals.Your clinician identifies the exact source of pain using orthopedic assessment, palpation, and movement testing.

We develop your personalized treatment plan, including the number of sessions and any supportive therapies (e.g., PRP, Prolozone, physiotherapy exercises).

Shockwave is applied to the injured area using a handheld device. Each session lasts 10–20 minutes, depending on the number of areas treated.

During Treatment

Most patients feel a pulsing, tapping sensation—comfortable for some, mildly intense for others. Tenderness is normal and typically decreases as the tissue responds. After treatment, you may feel temporary soreness or warmth, which typically resolves within 24 hours. You can walk, work, and exercise lightly the same day. Most patients need 3–6 sessions, spaced weekly, depending on severity and chronicity. Relief is felt immediately after the session.
