SkinPen Microneedling

SkinPen Precision is the first microneedling device cleared by both Health Canada and the U.S. FDA specifically for the treatment of facial acne scars. At Upper Room Clinic in Toronto, we use SkinPen as a stand-alone aesthetic treatment or in combination with Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) for deeper rejuvenation, faster healing, and enhanced results.

Microneedling has become one of the most-requested aesthetic treatments in Canadian clinics — not because it's new, but because it's effective, low-downtime, and skin-type-friendly compared to many laser-based alternatives.

What is microneedling?

Microneedling — also called Collagen Induction Therapy — uses a precision medical device with sterile, single-use needle cartridges to create thousands of tiny, controlled micro-channels in the skin. These micro-injuries are designed to be small enough to heal quickly but significant enough to trigger the skin's natural wound-repair cascade, stimulating new collagen and elastin production over the following weeks and months.

Unlike laser resurfacing, microneedling does not rely on heat. The skin's pigment-producing melanocytes are largely undisturbed, which is why microneedling is generally considered safer across a wider range of skin tones and Fitzpatrick types.

Why SkinPen specifically

There are dozens of microneedling devices on the market — from inexpensive at-home rollers to clinical pens — and they are not all equivalent. SkinPen Precision was the first device to undergo and pass full Health Canada and FDA review for facial acne scarring in patients aged 22 and older, with extension to neck treatment in patients aged 18 and older.

  • Sterile, single-use needle cartridges that meet medical-device standards
  • Precisely controlled needle depth — adjustable for different skin areas and concerns
  • Consistent precision motor speed that maintains even penetration
  • Safety and efficacy data reviewed by Canadian and U.S. regulators

For patients comparing microneedling options, the clinical-grade device matters as much as the practitioner's technique. Both contribute to your result.

The Benefits

SkinPen microneedling may support:

  • Acne scarring — SkinPen's primary cleared indication; works particularly well on rolling and boxcar scars
  • Fine lines and wrinkles — especially around the eyes, mouth, and forehead
  • Skin texture and tone — uneven texture, enlarged pores, dull or rough skin
  • Stretch marks — off-label use with realistic expectations; multiple sessions usually required
  • Hyperpigmentation — with careful protocol selection by skin type
  • Décolleté and neck rejuvenation — addressing tech-neck lines and crepey skin

Microneedling pairs naturally with PRP drawn from your own blood. The growth factors are applied during and after microneedling, where they're absorbed through the freshly created micro-channels for compounded results.

Who should not have microneedling

  • Active acne breakouts in the treatment area (defer until resolved)
  • Active skin infections including cold sores or impetigo
  • Uncontrolled diabetes (impairs wound healing)
  • Current isotretinoin therapy (Accutane) — generally requires 6 months off before microneedling
  • Scleroderma or other connective-tissue disorders affecting the treatment area
  • History of keloid or hypertrophic scarring
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding (relative contraindication)
  • Recent radiation therapy in the treatment area
  • Active blood-thinner regimens that would increase bruising risk

Our team will review your full medical history and current medications at consultation to confirm candidacy.

During Treatment

A typical SkinPen session takes 60–75 minutes including topical numbing (20–30 min), cleansing and prep, the microneedling procedure (10–20 min), application of post-procedure serums, and aftercare instructions. Most patients describe the procedure as a mild sandpaper or prickling sensation. Mild redness and pinpoint swelling for 12–48 hours afterward is normal — similar to a moderate sunburn. Most clinical protocols recommend a series of three to six sessions spaced four to six weeks apart, with maintenance treatments every 6–12 months. Initial improvements are usually visible at 4–6 weeks, with full collagen-remodeling effects developing over 3–6 months.

Why Choose Upper Room Clinic for SkinPen

SkinPen results depend as much on the device, technique, and integration with other care as on the procedure itself. At Upper Room Clinic in Toronto:

  • Health Canada-licensed SkinPen Precision — the regulator-cleared device, not a generic pen or roller
  • Physician-supervised aesthetic care — our medical team reviews your skin, history, and goals before any treatment plan
  • Compounding therapies — combine SkinPen with PRP, red light therapy, and supportive IV nutrients for stronger outcomes
  • Patient-centred protocols — session count, depth, and pairing match your specific concerns and Fitzpatrick type
  • Whole-person medicine — we look at hormonal, nutritional, and inflammatory contributors to skin appearance, not just topical interventions
  • Convenient Toronto location at 1849 Yonge Street, with Oakville coming soon, serving the GTA

Patients choose us for our combination of clinical precision and a deeply personalized approach to skin health.
