Why Patients Choose Us

Medicine That Looks At The Whole Picture.

Most pain clinics treat where it hurts. We investigate why it hurts — and build a plan around your biology, your history and your goals.

Principle One

Pioneer In Physician-Led Pain Management.

Every patient is assessed and treated by Dr. Biljana Kostovic — a Toronto pioneer in physician-led pain management, drawing on 35 years of clinical practice including emergency medicine.

Principle Two

Whole-Person Assessment.

Pain rarely has a single cause. We look at how the joint, muscles, prior injuries, lifestyle and overall health all contribute — so the treatment addresses the actual driver.

Principle Three

Advanced Options When Care Plateaus.

Standard care first when it's the right answer. In-clinic injection procedures, advanced diagnostics, and evidence-based non-surgical protocols when it isn't. You'll always know your options before deciding.

How It Works

From First Call To A Treatment Plan.

Patient Experiences

What Patients Say.

After two years of physio, cortisone and a surgery consult I wasn't ready for, I was told there was nothing more they could do. Dr. Kostovic found a root cause in our first visit. I'm back to hiking.

Susan M.Davisville · Chronic knee pain

She actually listens. Takes notes, asks follow-up questions, looks at everything together. I left the first consult with more answers than I'd had in three years.

Mark T.Leaside · Shoulder & back pain

I'd been through so many clinics. But Dr. Kostovic's approach is completely different. She's a real MD with serious credentials, not someone selling supplements. I'm running again.

Common Questions

Before You Book.

What is a pain management clinic?

A medical practice that specializes in evaluating and treating pain — particularly pain that hasn't resolved with first-line care. Upper Room Clinic is physician-led: every assessment and treatment is overseen by Dr. Biljana Kostovic, MD.

What types of pain do you treat?

Knee, shoulder, hip, ankle, foot, wrist and hand pain. Back and neck pain. Sciatica. Sports injuries and post-traumatic joint pain. Chronic pain that hasn't responded to physiotherapy or conservative care.

Do I need a referral from my family doctor?

No. You can self-refer by booking a free 15-minute discovery call, or by phoning the Davisville clinic at 647-521-8024.

Is treatment covered by OHIP?

Some in-clinic procedures performed by a licensed Ontario physician are covered by OHIP. Other advanced treatments are private-pay and may be partially covered by extended health benefits. We provide detailed receipts for insurance submission.

How is this different from physiotherapy or chiropractic care?

A physician-led pain clinic adds medical diagnostics, advanced treatment options, prescription management when appropriate, and oversight from a licensed MD. Many of our patients have already tried physio — we're the next step.

What happens at my first consultation?

A comprehensive assessment: medical history, prior treatments, imaging review, physical examination, and a discussion of your goals. You leave with a clear understanding of what is causing your pain.

How quickly can I be seen?

Most patients are scheduled for their initial consultation within 1–2 weeks of booking a discovery call. Acute sports injuries are often accommodated sooner.

Do I need imaging before my appointment?

No. Bring any imaging or reports you already have, but recent imaging is not required to book.

Can you help with sports injuries?

Yes — we see a high volume of active patients with sports-related injuries: runners with knee or ankle pain, recreational athletes with shoulder or rotator cuff issues, gym-goers with tendon pain.

Have you helped patients who were told they needed joint replacement or surgery?

Yes, regularly. A meaningful number of patients who come to us have already received a surgical recommendation and are seeking a second opinion or more time. Depending on the joint, the severity, and what's been tried before, advanced non-surgical options can be a legitimate path — not just a delay tactic. We don't promise outcomes we can't deliver, but we also don't tell a patient surgery is inevitable before we've done a proper assessment.

How long is the initial consultation?

Up to 30 minutes with Dr. Kostovic — focused, unhurried time. We review your medical history, prior treatments and any imaging you have, and complete a thorough physical assessment. Patients used to 10-minute GP appointments notice the difference.

Why does an emergency medicine background matter for pain treatment?

Most pain specialists spend their careers in a single area of medicine. Emergency medicine is the opposite — it demands pattern recognition across every system in the body, under pressure, often with incomplete information. Dr. Kostovic trained in emergency medicine before moving into pain management and functional medicine, and that diagnostic instinct stays. Patients with chronic pain often have complex presentations where the cause isn't where the pain is. That kind of full-picture thinking is rare in pain medicine.
